Cassette is a zero food-waste venue in Kensington. The food we create uses the root-to-stalk method, meaning we use every element of the fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients we source.

Our food ethos is keeping things as simple as possible. Every season, we craft an adaptable from-the-farm style menu that responds to local availabilities and makes the most of the community of producers and makers around us.

Pickles, preserves and ferments help us reduce food waste, however, whatever food we can’t incorporate into a dish goes into our Closed Loop bio-composter which turns food waste into nutrient strong compost in 24 hours, feeding the soil of the building’s plants.

Cassette is situated on the ground floor of Assemble’s first project delivered through the purchase pathway which aims to create an alternate pathway to homeownership.

Our name – Cassette - was chosen by the residents living above us, and is a nod to our site’s past as the Dex Audio factory. Once one of the biggest cassette tape, CD and DVD duplication facilities in Australia.

Situated behind a restored Art-Deco façade designed by prolific architect Harry Norris, Cassette’s interiors were designed by award-winning Melbourne architects Six Degrees. Light-filled, and accented with reclaimed Australian spotted gum, terrazzo and raw metals, the design pays homage to the industrial roots of the neighbourhood.

Helping keep our carbon footprint as low as possible, we’re powered by 100% accredited GreenPower energy, with most of our energy being generated by Hepburn Energy – Australia’s first community-owned wind farm.
